As Blood Runs Black guitar tone

A tone for the band, not for one recording: the sound they are known for, so expect to move a knob for any particular song. Nobody has played this one yet; it comes from a documented rig, not from ears.

Dial it in Guitar Rig 7 Pro by hand, using only components the Pro edition includes. A starting point nobody has played in this edition yet.

A noise gate into an amp modelled on a Marshall JCM800, through a Marshall 1960 4x12 cab.

Knobs, in signal order

  1. Noise GateNoise gate

    • Threshold, press Learn
    • Release, 20 ms

The recipe also sets depth, which Noise Gate does not have. Leave its other controls where they load.

  2. Lead 800Amp

    • Preamp, 7 of 10
    • Bass, 6 of 10
    • Mid, 5 of 10
    • Treble, 6.5 of 10
    • Presence, 6 of 10
    • Master, 5 of 10

The recipe also sets sensitivity, which Lead 800 does not have. Leave its other controls where they load.

  3. Matched Cabinet ProCab

    • Cabinet, the one that loads with Lead 800

The rig calls for a Marshall 1960 4x12 cabinet. NI does not publish the names of the matched cabinets, so start from the one that loads with the amp and change it by ear.

  • Note: A plain number is the knob's own reading on a 0 to 10 scale unless the setting gives another range; %, Hz, dB and ms are the units the Guitar Rig 7 interface shows. Amp, drive and fuzz knobs are assumed to read 0 to 10.

Where the rig comes from

  • Equipboard's band page lists Nita Strauss, Dan Sugarman and Greg Kirkpatrick as guitarists, Sugarman on a Kiesel Crescent 7, and among the band's gear, without saying who uses what, a Marshall JVM410H and a KSR Colossus head, a Boss GT-1000 and DiMarzio Evolution and Pandemonium humbuckers; its sound guide says amps such as the JVM410H give the band's saturated tone.
